Sedation

Although modern dentistry means many of the procedures we carry out are virtually painless, or at most a little uncomfortable, there are still a number of people who are anxious about visiting the dentist.

We are used to looking after nervous patients and will do our best to put you at ease.  For patients who need additional help to get them through an appointment, we offer a range of sedation therapies.

Inhalation Sedation

Inhalation sedation is very common, and involves you breathing in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen (also known as laughing gas).  This makes you feel pleasantly relaxed, and you will be conscious and able to co-operate with the dentist throughout.

This form of sedation also uses relaxation and suggestion techniques, which means we will talk softly to you during the procedure, explaining what we are doing and what you will feel.  Once the treatment has been finished, the effects of the gas mixture are quickly reversed by breathing in pure oxygen.  There are no after affects.

Sometimes oral sedation can be administered, either in tablet or medicine form.  These have a similar relaxing affect, but it may last longer

Intravenous Sedation

Intravenous Sedation involves a small injection, usually in the back of your hand.  This is not uncomfortable, and will quickly make you feel drowsy and calm.

Again, you will still be conscious and able to co-operate with the dentist.  Afterwards you are unlikely to remember much about the treatment.
